Take Back the Holidays… and Your Life!

Christmas is in sixty days, are you ready?

Does the question make your stomach knot up?

For many the holiday season has become the helliday season, and in general, wives and mothers get hit even harder than men. How did a season of celebration become something to be endured?

If you’ve had enough, take a stand for this year being different. Spend less and do less. Say no to the things you don’t want to do, and some of the things you enjoy. Set a sane schedule with some room for last minute things. Then stick to it, and don’t add something unless you remove something.

Yes, doing this will be difficult. Yes, it will offend someone, probable several someones. Those people have some agenda that is more important to them than your health, happiness, and sanity. Offending such people is necessary if you want a good, healthy life.

Beyond the next two months, odds are your life is too busy all the time. If you can gain control now, you can make 2016 a much, much better year. It will be better for you, for your husband, for your marriage, and for your kids. It will be better for your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

I imagine many of those who act offended might actually be relieved. When we say “no,” we give others permission to do the same. And when we say “no,” we are saying “yes” to something more valuable. This is an opportunity to exercise stewardship and leadership. Great post and excellent timing!

We opted out years ago by sending a friendly note to all our relatives saying that we would no longer participate in gift exchanges. Without a doubt, that was a relief for everyone!

We have cut back on the number of party invitations we accept. I think there are few, if any, who are offended. Everyone knows that the holiday season is just too busy for nearly everyone.

@Rosemary – Gift exchanges can add up, and you usually end up with junk you don’t need.
