I’m sure you’re all familiar with being too emotionally tired to do something you theoretically have the time and energy to do. It might be a task you do over and over. It could be something you have come to dislike doing. It could be something that should be simple. Physically you’re up to doing the task, but emotionally it feels too difficult to face it.

Men deal with this as well. We may not be as good at understanding it and we’re probably much worse at communicating about it, but we face it. One of the big ones for men is dealing with financial things when finances are bad. We know we need to pay the bills or return the call from some company who wants their overdue payment. We have the time and the ability, but we don’t feel up to the emotional hurdle we have to jump to do it.
His emotional exhaustion may or may not have anything to do with what he’s struggling to do. Problems at work are a common source of this for men. Sexual difficulties are another common trigger. Health problems can also be the issue. Anything that makes him feel “less manly” can leave him feeling too emotionally empty to do things he knows he should do.
If your husband is struggling with this, it’s easy to say something that just makes it worse. If you suspect he’s emotionally overwhelmed, think about how you feel when you get that way and treat him with the kindness you would like to receive.
