Having Many Choices Can Be A Bad Thing

Lori and I have spent the last week in Pennsylvania getting some training. Today is a down day before we fly home on Tuesday. Today I expect we will spend time with a few of our friends in Lancaster, and I’m sure we will have a meal at The Shady Maple Smorgasbord

The Shady Maple’s website says they have “200 feet of deliciously authentic Pennsylvania Dutch cooking” but that doesn’t do it justice. If you took one teaspoon of every item they have you couldn’t possibly eat it all. The number of choices is staggering, and all of it’s good eating!

Having Many Choices Can Be A Bad Thing

While a lot of choices may make us feel good, numerous studies have found it actually makes our lives more difficult. We find it difficult to order at a restaurant with a massive menu. Then when our food comes we see someone else eating one of the things we almost got and we wonder if we made a wrong choice.

The same thing plays out in our marriages. In the past, by the time you were thinking marriage you knew the dozen or so possible spouses in your area. There were very few choices, and half of them weren’t even a consideration, so finding the “right one” was pretty easy and there wasn’t a lot of “what if” thinking later.

Has comparison thinking hurt your marriage? Where else has it been a problem in your life? Don’t let “what could have been” get in the way of what can be.
