Earlier this month Lori and I spend a week plus in Pennsylvania getting trained by House on the Rock Family Ministries to do their weekend Marriage Hub marriage intensives. We’ve been thinking about doing this for more than a year. What put us over the top was the results we saw when friends of ours went to an intensive.

A marriage intensive is for couples who are well on their way to a divorce. Many who attend are or have been separated, and most have discusscused divorce. Sometimes one or both spouses feel it’s hopeless, and some freely admit they attend an intensive just so they can say they tried. However, if a couple does the weekend and also does the 15 weeks of follow up material, they have an 85% chance of staying married!

The intensive doesn’t solve your problems; rather it gives you the tools to do that. It also helps you remember the love you once had and gets you back on the same team. It’s not magic, but it is powerful. And the tools you learn keep working, so you won’t end up in trouble again.

Having been through all the material, and then been “second chair” at an actual weekend, I am very impressed. We saw significant changes in the couples we were with, and there have already been promising follow up reports from some of the couples. I look forward to leading some of these intensives.

Marriage intensives aren’t cheap, but then neither is a divorce. If divorce looks likely for you, this is what you need. At the moment Marriage Hub has only a few locations, but they are adding more. There are other intensives out there. I’m sure the ones done by the Smalley Institute and Focus on the Family are top rate. I can’ speak to any of the others, but if they have a good track record they should be fine.
