What Might Be Your Fault?

I did a post on The Generous Husband with this same title and decided it would be good to do it here too.

I’ve seen a lot of marriage victim blaming where someone who is being treated wrongly by their spouse is asked what they have done to cause that behaviour. But while this sometimes misses the mark, it can also be valid.

What Might Be Your Fault?

Imagine this: Every time the kitchen trash gets full, you tear into your husband, belittling him, questioning his love for you, and asking why he can’t just keep the trash empty.

That might get the trash taken out, but what does it do to your husband? How does it make him feel? Is it not likely he will do something to make you pay for how you treated him? Perhaps you will pay in some unrelated way, or maybe he will ignore the trash all the more to get back at you.

How you treat your husband significantly affects how he treats you. Yes, he should choose to be nice even if you’re not, but that’s contrary to human nature. If your bad treatment is rare he may rise to the occasion and “be the bigger person”. However, if you routinely do things that upset him, he will start to retaliate, even if he’s not aware he’s doing it.

~ Paul – I’m XY, and it’s far easier to be nice to people who are nice!
