Don’t Split, Fix It!

I’m going to make a specific rant here, then apply it to a bigger range of things.

I’ve seen this easily a dozen times. A couple has marital problems. Maybe they separate or maybe the problems are known by many in their church. The wife then leaves the church because she is embarrassed. The couple makes the marriage work, but the wife refuses to go back to the church. She will talk about feeling judged, but from my viewpoint, she is just embarrassed about their problems and/or her actions. So rather than dealing with it, she splits.

And this happens with more than church. We get embarrassed and we leave. We may be embarrassed by what we did, or our kids did, or our spouse did. Or it could be some life situation such as the loss of a job or some financial setback. What causes it is irrelevant. The issue is the idea that the solution is to cut ties and start over.

I certainly understand the desire to start over with a clean slate. But being able to deal with life and work past problems is a mark of maturity and emotional health. Those who can stick it out are healthier than those who run.

If you ever feel tempted to just split from a friend, a group, or a church, ask yourself why. If it comes down to your embarrassment, please try to get past that. It won’t be any fun, but the process will help you grow and become a better person
