Over on TGH today I talked to the guys about what to do when their wife “asks” if the load they just secured to the vehicle is tied on well enough. My suggestion was to smile and add a strap because she’s worth it.

But here I want to address a couple of other things about this.

When you ask if he’s sure it’s safe, what he hears is you think he’s an idiot. Or horribly careless. Or both.

Of course, you’re not really asking him if he thinks it’s safe. What you’re really saying is “Would you add another strap for me?” My suggestion is to actually ask that question. Rather than implying something about him, admit to yourself and to him that the situation makes you nervous. Doing it this way improves your chances of getting what you want and it significantly reduces the odds of a fight or the silent treatment.
