What He Says, Not How He Says It

If your husband comes across as angry, do you listen to his words or his tone of voice?

Man with fire spewing from his mouth.

If you can get past the anger and hear the thoughts and feelings behind the emotion you have an opportunity to diffuse the situation. Deal with the issue in the moment and bring up the anger at another time if you think you should. (If anger is a rare event, maybe not. If it’s common, you need to have a talk about it.)

Also, realise that what seems like anger may actually be defensiveness. If he’s gotten attacked in the past, by you or someone when he was growing up, being defensive makes sense. If you ignore how he says things and focus on what he says for a while he might drop the anger. If he doesn’t, find a calm time to point out you listen and the anger/defensiveness isn’t necessary.
