Not What Friends Are For

Over on Quora, a woman asked:

“My partner doesn’t want me to talk to anyone about our relationship issues. I think it’s important to get an outside perspective and a reflection from a close non-mutual friend. What do you think?”

By “non-mutual friend” I assume she means “one of my friends”.

Let’s be honest, what are the chances that one of her best friends will tell her she is in any way wrong? What are the chances she will tell her that she has done everything right and it’s all her husband’s fault? Usually, when we go to our friends we’re not looking for an outside perspective; we’re looking for someone to tell us it’s not our fault.

This is human nature. But like a lot of human nature, it’s not the best thing to do. Outside perspective should come from someone who is not a friend of either spouse. And ideally, that person should have some training.
