If you give your husband a suggestion and he doesn’t follow it, do you feel hurt he’s not doing things the way you want?

The truth is a suggestion is just that. It is not a request.

I’ve been told women use “suggestions” as a kind way of offering an alternative way of doing something. Since hearing this a couple of years ago I’ve seen it a number of times. It may not be universal, but it does happen. With other women, it may work, but men don’t function this way. To us, a suggestion means “If you have not made up your mind, you might consider _____?” There is no expectation tied to a suggestion, and no foul if it’s not taken.

If you want him to consider doing something a different way, you need to say that. “Would you be willing to consider _____?” is good. “I’d prefer ______ if that works for you” is even better.
