A man talking to women about weight is probably near suicidal. But y’all know I’m crazy, so here goes.
I have been significantly overweight since 2006. When I cut back on and then stopped doing hard work in the Texas heat I didn’t cut my food intake nearly enough. At my highest, I was 315 – which is morbidly obese even on a 6′ 2″ frame. I got down to 270 and bounced about there plus or minus ten pounds for about a decade. I could lose weight, but I never stayed at it long enough. Three years ago I got serious about it. I was thrilled when I went from obese to overweight. I have done pretty well for the last two years, although I put on almost ten pounds this holiday eating season. That plus the weight I have not lost, I need to drop 30 pounds or so.
More recently Lori has gotten serious about losing weight. She now is now at a several decades low and still working on it. I’m super proud of her because I know how much more difficult weight loss is for women. I could lose weight three or four times as fast as she could when I was younger and can still do it more easily. It’s one of those places where being female sucks.

I also know a lot of you have been burned by your husband on this. Maybe by his words or perhaps you just know what he is thinking. Many men don’t understand the biological difference that makes it so much easier for us to lose weight and that can result in some unloving things being thought and said. It may also mean you don’t want him to know you’re trying to lose weight, which makes it rather difficult to make the attempt. And yes, society is ugly to women about how they look, with weight being high on the list. You have it bad and it’s not fair.
All of that said, for the rest of the year, I will once a month offer a gentle reminder that this matters for our health. Screw what others think and do it for you. Do it however works for you and tell people who have helpful suggestions to go and… ah, to go away. Or thank them and ignore them.
And here is the first bit of advice you can ignore – Lori and I have found that intermittent fasting has made losing weight less difficult.
BTW, I will be posting about this to husbands in a few weeks. If you have something you would like to say, have at it.
~ Paul – I’m XY, and I’m still fat, but I’m getting there.
