I have a large and eclectic playlist that runs as I work. The other day I was listening as Lightnin’ Strikes played, and I realised it’s a horrible song!

Basically, this guy is telling his girl that he has no control over his sex drive and he will gladly do as much as any woman will let him do. But he assures her that when he is done screwing around and ready to “settle down” she will be his one and only and he will be true to her. But until then, he’s going to do any woman who’s willing.

That song came out in 1965, so it’s a bit before I was making my own music choices. But I can imagine being a teenage boy soaking in songs with that kind of message. I’m being told nature takes over and “I can’t stop myself”. Sex is a power too great for me to control and if any girl gives me a hint she’s willing, it’s on and it’s not my fault! I’ve not only been given an excuse to do as many girls as I can, but I have also been told it’s the only natural way to be.

So I got to thinking, what kind of really bad messages are we subject to today? I don’t have to think long to find them in music, magazines, TV, moves, and social media. We swim in this stuff and all too often it modifies our thinking without us even being aware.

My intention is not to say we should avoid all music not performed by Pat Boone, but I do think it would be wise to be more aware of what we consume and to think about how a lifetime of what we have listed to and watched might have skewed us from what God would like.
