As I have mentioned, I now do most of the cooking in our home. And this includes when we take food to a friend’s house or a potluck.
This transition has not been without detractors. I’ve had a few folks suggest I’m less of a man and Lori has had more than a few suggest she is less of a woman. We choose to ignore this, but it’s certainly a thing.
This Sunday on the way home from a church potluck, Lori told me she’d had another man bemoan the fact that his wife won’t let him do any real cooking. I was unaware she has heard this before. Apparently, these men are allowed to do something like cut vegetables, usually under close supervision, but if he tries to do a meal she says no or stands there and tells him he’s doing it wrong the whole time.
For me, cooking is a way of expressing creativity and that makes it important for my emotional health. I’d be pretty upset with my wife if she was unwilling to “allow” me to cook.
This same thing could be applied to other things and not just things that have a traditional gender role. God gave your husband gifts, talents, and desires. Who are you to say God is wrong? Don’t just let him do what God has put in him, be all about facilitating him doing those things!
~ Paul – I’m XY, and I made a great pasta salad for the potluck!
