The Negativity Trap

Life has been busy and difficult around here recently. Nothing horrible, just a whole lot of things adding together. Working outside in the heat, humidity, and smoke is certainly not helping.

I tend to get grumpy when things pile up. I know it’s wrong and I’m getting better at being aware of it sooner rather than later, but it’s still difficult to get out of it once I start.

I sometimes see this in the comments, both here and on TGH. Someone is down on their spouse, and nothing anyone says is going to change their mind. Even if what they say is mostly true, their attitude is a trap. The further they go into this the worst it gets. They see more and more bad, and less and less of the good. The negativity trap can kill a marriage and it certainly makes it less enjoyable for both spouses.

We have a choice. Not our initial reaction, at least not at first, but we can choose to not stay in the grumpy negativity trap once we recognise it. This has nothing to do with other people, this is about us, our integrity, and making wise choices.
