A fellow over on TGH complained no one ever writes about women’s use of porn. It’s a valid issue, so here we go.
About a third of self-proclaimed Christian women say they currently use porn. When I say porn I don’t mean erotica or romance novels, I mean images, usually videos, of sex.
But it goes well beyond the third currently looking. If you’re 35 or younger, the odds are very high you saw porn growing up. Maybe a little, maybe a lot. Maybe mild stuff, maybe hardcore. But if you saw it, it affected you, and that effect was not positive. Aside from guilt and shame, it probably gave you body image issues and twisted your idea about what sex should be.

The dirty little secret is porn turns women on. This has been repeatedly shown by tests. Even if a woman finds what she sees gross, it arouses her body. And that arousal is why so many women keep looking. Maybe it gives them a turn-on they don’t get from sex. Maybe it helps them get aroused for sex. Some use it privately, some with their husband. Some do both, perhaps hiding their private use from him.
We’ve heard from women who sought out porn to try to learn about sex. Or to see sex in a positive way. Others say they wanted to learn new ways to have sex. Of course, there are better ways to do all these things, ways that don’t come with the baggage of porn. Any short term gain is going to be lost in time. It will cheat both you and your husband out of the sex life God wants you to have.
If you or a friend struggles with porn, I suggest SheRecovery, formerly Dirty Girls Ministries. Great resources by and for women.
~ Paul – I’m XY, and sadly porn is a female problem too.
