Lori and I have long taught that in a marriage the grown-up goes first. In other words, when the marriage is stuck and won’t improve until one person makes a unilateral move, the more mature person makes that move.

I’ve had to be the grown-up in our marriage a few times (but not as often as Lori 🙄) and it sucks. But the sooner someone does it, the better.

In some marriages, both spouses play the grown-up at different times. That’s a good thing. In other marriages, it’s always or almost always one person who is the grown-up. I imagine that’s really annoying, but if that person refuses to do it then both of them and the marriage suffer.

The reality is God told us to turn the other cheek, go the extra mile, and give more than is asked of us, and He did not exclude marriage from that!

Being a grown-up is the goal. If you are usually the grown-up, then good for you, and pray for your husband to get there. If he is usually the grown-up, you need to work on yourself.
