Last week I heard a radio show talking about difficult working conditions and trying to help workers and bosses understand how to make things better. They suggested that because the “boss” would speak up if he didn’t like something, he assumes his subordinates will do likewise. So when no one complains, he just assumes everything is good.

I don’t bring this up as an add on to what I have been saying about abuse. Abusive behaviour is well past this. But I think this wrong assumption happens in marriages and, given differences in men and women, I suspect it’s more common for a man to assume no news is good news.

Assuming he knows you don’t like something doesn’t mean he is unaware. Just because all your girlfriends would know it without you saying a word doesn’t mean your hubby would. Even if it seems impossible he doesn’t know, saying it means he does know it. Ideally, your first mention should be calm and mild, even if you have been frustrated about the issue for a long time. If that doesn’t work, then you can be more forceful.
