The other day I was talking with my 31-year-old son about a mutual older friend who had injured himself doing something he should have asked for help to do. And there were people who would gladly have helped him. My son asked why he did this and I explained he was probably trying not to be a burden. And my son said, “Well that’s stupid and he should get over it.“

Yeah, my son didn’t fall far from the tree. But he’s right. We can hurt ourselves and cost others by allowing our pride to keep us from asking for help when we should. Regardless of why we don’t ask, it’s silly and we should get over it.
Have you ever hurt yourself physically or emotionally because you didn’t ask for help? Have you ever had to short change your husband or children because of such injuries?
BTW, I asked my son to let me know I’m ever guilty of such a thing – not that I think he needed to be encouraged to do so.
