My wonderful, neat, organised wife recently wrote a post entitled Clear The Clutter in which she said “a neat uncluttered room can be so relaxing and welcoming.” Now personally I don’t care. I’m one of those “An empty desk is a sign of an empty mind” people. And back when I had stacks of stuff I could find things just fine. I’m not denying Lori is right, as I have seen the science, but in and of myself I just don’t care enough to do anything about it.

However, over the last couple of decades, I have become much less messy. Probably not as much as my wife would like, but it’s way better and I know it makes her life better. And making her life better is why I do it. I do it because and only because I care about her. I find that reason enough to do something that matters to her even if I will never be able to fully understand it.

Of course, the other side of this is I don’t regularly trumpet that I am doing this for her. Apart from this blog post, she doesn’t hear that, even though she knows it. Even more importantly I don’t expect anything in return for it, and how well I do does not change based on what she is doing for me. This is an act of love, pure and simple.

I’m sure there are a couple of things you would like your husband to do for you like this. But trying to convince him you are right and he’s wrong is not the best path. Ask him to do it because he loves you and then accept it as that. Be okay with him not understanding it but doing it because he loves you.

And of course, the other side is to ask yourself what your husband might like you do to for him in this way. (And no, sex should not be on that list!)
