We all know that folks are less than honest on social media. Everyone put the best light on what they do, and comparing our real life with the curated lives of others is a sure way to come up short.

There’s another kind of social media distortion, that is especially devious and can do real damage to your marriage. When a couple is having trouble, and even more so if they are getting a divorce, one or both of them may start a social media campaign of hate and innuendo that would make a mud slinging politician blush. I’ve seen this a couple of times from one half of a couple Lori and I knew well. It starts with hints and seemingly innocent memes. One woman started posting a whole lot of stuff about abusive men. She never openly accused her husband, but the message was clear. Thing is, Lori and I knew the couple, and the wife was more abusive than the husband! If you have spent much time on social media I’ve sure you’ve seen this kind of thing.
Obviously, any slander done this way is a problem, but my concern is with a subtler issue. If you see very much of this, the message you take away is most men are jerks or something far worse. If you consume too much of it, you may start suspecting your husband of something he has never given you cause to consider. When men, in general, look worse because of the hate and slander of women having relationship problems, it’s inevitable your husband will get painted with that broad brush.
Yes, some men are jerks. And, yes, some women are the things men say or intimate they are on social media. However many husbands and wives are decent but imperfect people who mess up occasionally but make kind and loving choices far more often.
