Start With The Bottom Line

If you listen to a couple of men talking, you won’t hear much “foreplay”. There’s no small talk to get things going and no details before getting to the point.

When my son comes up to borrow something, he says “Do you have any decent paintbrushes” or “I need a Phillips head bit“. He will likely tell me what he is working on as I get what he needs, but he doesn’t start with that. And I don’t get more than a hello, if that, when he comes in. And that’s just fine because it’s how we communicate and it gets the job done.

Recently my son and I had received a long explanation of why something we were doing for a woman on the property needed to be done in the way it was requested. As we walked away he said to me “I didn’t need all that information, just tell me what you need me to do“. He would never have said that to the woman, but he was clearly frustrated by what he saw as a lot of unneeded information.

Bored husband listening to his wife going on and on.

I realise women have a need to say more and that’s okay. But if you want him to hear the part that really matters, start with that and then give him the details after. Giving him information the way his brain works is kind to him and improves the odds of him hearing and retaining the information. And that will increase the odds of him doing what you want. If he needs more information, he will ask.
