There’s a funny YouTube video which I could not find. It’s a couple out on a date and the man is unusually quiet. Throughout the date, the woman is thinking he’s mad at her, or bored, or cheating on her, or about to break up with her. At the end, we learn his car has a problem and he has been trying to figure out how to deal with it.
Most men think through a problem before discussing it. Even if they plan to ask for help, they want to have thought about it before they do that. So yeah, a problem can result in a man being less talkative.

There are other reasons for a man to go quiet and, of course, some men just don’t talk much in general. Given women tend to communicate most of what goes on between their ears, his silence can feel uncomfortable for her. That can lead to trying to figure out why he’s being quiet. Since women don’t think and feel the way men do, a woman trying to guess why a man isn’t talking much is very likely to go wrong. And asking her female friends will fail because they’re not men.
If you want to know what he’s thinking and feeling, ask him. Then wait while he gathers his thoughts. Then accept what he says as the truth.
If your husband routinely refused to share what’s on his mind when you ask, you have a problem. If you don’t ask and he doesn’t volunteer, that’s not a problem. And silence probably doesn’t mean what you think it means.

~ Paul – I’m XY, and my car has issues today. I hope it’s the thermostat, which for some unknown reason is on the bottom of the engine, not the top as God intended.
