That’s Not Respect!

I have exceptional hearing. So did my dad and so does my son. This means I hear a lot of things people don’t think I can hear.

So the other day I’m having coffee and at the table behind me is a young Christian couple getting marriage ministry. I was not trying to listen but given my ears and the subject matter I heard most of it. The woman was explaining how she was learning to respect her husband. When he did something wrong, like going the wrong way to get to Costco, she said nothing and just let him figure out his mistake on his own.

Folks, that’s not respect!

Apparently, she used to tell him how stupid he was any time he made a mistake, so I guess silence is better than that, but it’s not respect. Letting someone make a mistake when you could prevent it is not respect. Kindly pointing out a mistake is not disrespect. Letting someone look stupid is the opposite of respect.

There have been some in the church who saw any questioning as disrespectful. I assume someone with that twisted outlook had spoken to the woman I overheard. I was glad the person working with the couple tried to guide her away from this idea.

If your husband has a problem with you lovingly pointing out obvious mistakes, your marriage needs help ASAP. If you think watching him make mistakes is a good idea, your marriage needs help ASAP. Helping each other avoid mindless mistakes is one of the benefits of marriage!

~ Paul – I’m XY, and I’d be unhappy if my wife knew I was going the wrong way and didn’t say anything.

BTW: I try to mention during the month of June that what I do here is donation supported. This is not “help, we’re out of money”, it’s just that I fail to mention it as often as I should. If you feel what I do here is worthwhile, please consider a one-off or recurring donation. Many thanks!
