Do You Own Your Part?

Lori and I have worked with plenty of couples considering divorce. Some stay together and get by. Some stay together and have a much better marriage. And some divorce because one is unwilling to keep working on the marriage.

We’ve now been in one place long enough to have had couples who got divorced both get remarried. Or one remarries and the other is living with someone. The results of these new relationships generally go as we would expect from what we learned about the couple working with them. The one who was able to own their part of the problems generally does well the second time around. The one who tried to put the whole divorce on their spouse usually doesn’t do so well in their next relationship.

Oh, and those couples who stay together and have better marriages? Both husband and wife are good about owning their part of problems.

This is not to suggest you should ignore what your husband is doing that’s wrong or not working for you. Tell him when you think he’s wrong and let him know what you wish he would change. But also listen to what he says about you and then deal with it. Pray about it and ask God to show you any truth in what he’s said. If you find he’s right about something, then work at doing it differently.
