When I was looking for an image for the rewrite of Men See Responsibilities More Than Rights, I came across the picture I’m using for this post. It shows a man’s hand holding his family’s house in a glass ball. The problem with this is that while it keeps things out, it also keeps things in. It’s a cage.

A man’s natural, God given drive to keep his family safe can go too far, moving past safety and becoming controlling and limiting. This is often identified as abusive, and abusive men certainly do these things. But please don’t be too quick to label it as abuse. False accusations of abuse hurt the man being accused, and dilute attention to real abused.
Aside from taking a natural urge too far, men have heard a lot of guys talk. They understand how some men misinterpret, perhaps intentionally, certain words, actions, and outfits. So what appears excessive to the point of abuse my well be valid protection.
If he seems overprotective, ask him why he is concerned, and listen to his heart. Is there something there you need to hear, or is he just being overprotective? How you react should be flavoured by that understanding.
