Decent men feel protective of women. I recently had a couple of occasions when I had to control myself in this regard.

In one situation, someone close I care about was crying as she asked Lori and I to help her with a relative who was not taking no for an answer. I struggled to not say ugly things, and I was really glad the other woman was not there. In the moment, I wanted to hurt the other woman! I would never do that, but I felt the urge.

The other situation was at our local coffee shop. A customer was being hideous to the barista. The barista is an acquaintance, nothing more. But I had to fight the urge to go protect her. Had it gone on much longer, I would have got up and stood in line, hoping my presence would embarrass the customer into being less horrible.

I’m sure you feel protective at times. For your kids, or your friends. But I doubt most women feel the violence that men feel when we see a woman being harmed. I think it’s how God made us. In days gone by women were all too frequently harmed by men, and this urge to protect, with violence if necessary, made women safer. In a world with better boundaries, our natural inclination needs to be tempered. But it’s still how God made us, and for good reason.
