Last week over on Doing Marriage Well, my wonderful wife talked about sacrificing for others, and specifically for our spouse.
It’s a valid issue, but I wonder if sacrifice is the best word. Maybe it’s just me, but sacrifice strikes me as costly in some way. Some of what I do for Lori is sacrifice. But much of what I do for her that I wouldn’t do on my own, doesn’t rise to the level of sacrifice.

There are restaurants we eat at more often than I would choose to eat at. It’s just a minor preference, and I’m happy to do it for her. I sometimes arrange my day to make time for something Lori wants, or to make things easier for her. Again, hardly a sacrifice. And lifting something heavy or getting something of a high shelf is certainly not a sacrifice.
Some of it’s simple kindness. Some is generosity. And some is sacrifice. And that’s good. We should sacrifice for our spouse, and there are seasons when we should do a good deal of that. But too much sacrifice all the time is an indication something is wrong.
