Embracing Gender Differences for a Better Marriage

As I wrap up my last week doing this blog, I want to impress a few things on you before I move on.

Today: Your husband is not a woman.

I realise you know that intellectually. But do you really grasp what that means for the two of you as a married couple?

Perplexed and surprised husband and wife, pointing with index fingers at one another.

Much of our world is confused about genders. We’re told men and women are basically the same beyond a few plumbing differences. THIS. IS. NOT. TRUE.

All the very real differences of our minds and bodies aside, growing up as a male makes you very different from growing up as a female. If you study him well for years, you will get it most of the time. But even then you will never be able to empathise with what he feels, or fully understand why he feels that way.

A lot of the marriage problems we see are either caused by, or made far worse by, gender differences that neither spouse understands. This is why I’m big on getting marriage help from a couple. And it’s why spending time with other couples is a good for your marriage.

It’s not always a factor, but when there are problems, considering that gender differences are part of the issue is always smart.

What Is It With Men and Breasts?

Breasts: Every single woman has them, including his grandmother. You’d think by his mid-twenties, he’d be able to focus on women’s faces. ~ Seen on the Internet

I agree, men should look at your face, not your breasts. But the quote shows a lack of understanding on the part of the woman who said it. Multiple well done studies have found our brains are wired to notice breasts. And given God is the one who wired us, it seems He is to blame for this.

To be fair, God didn’t intend us to ever get a good look at breasts other than those of our wife. But that’s not the world we live in.

Man looking at his date's breasts.

Of course, men should control themselves. And they should not assume a woman showing a lot is making an offer. But you should understand it does take effort. You should also understand showing much cleavage is a big red arrow, that increases the effort needed to do what’s right.

In private, encourage your hubby to not control himself, and give him plenty to look at. I know you think your breasts are not lust worthy, but I assure you, your man does. So give him a show from time to time. He’ll be glad you did.

Why I Talk About Sex So Much

More than once it has been suggested to me that I talk too much about sex here. Friday’s post is always about sex. Wayback Wednesday is sometimes about sex. And sex gets mentioned as an aside in some posts not primarily about sex. I’d guess at least half of my posts touch on sex in some way. So yeah, I talk about it a lot.

Neon sign that says sex on a brick wall.

Here’s the thing: sex is a big deal to most men, and it affects how they think and act. So a blog about understanding men will deal with sex a good deal. What’s more, sex is a common point of contention in marriages, so a marriage focused blog should deal with sex.

Look beyond the sex, and consider where I reveal how sex impacts what your husband thinks, says, and does. Consider this Wednesday’s post about how your hormones affect your life; twice I suggested you could get him more interested in the topic by bring up a valid sexual aspect of the subject.

Generally my intention is not to use sex as advertisers do, adding it to things that have nothing to do with sex. Instead, I want you to understand that a lot of things link to sex in his mind. Beyond that, I’m not opposed to using sex to get his attention as long as it’s not manipulative or misleading. If him not doing certain things decreases your interest in sex, telling him that is honest and may make things better for both of you.

On the other hand, refusing sex is a sure but bad way to get his attention. And using sex to punish him is a horrible idea. Explaining reality is fine, but intentionally using sex to hurt or manipulate will not end well for your marriage.

Great Sex in Marriage: A Christian Perspective

Over on Quora, a fellow said women having mind-blowing orgasms should be the norm. I didn’t agree with his suggestions to make that happen, but I agree with his opening claim.

I’m a Christian. I believe how or bodies work is a result of how God built us. And when I study sex, which I have done for five decades, it’s abundantly clear that God created women to have great sex. If you set aside culture and look at just the biology of it, women should be more about sex than men, and they certainly should be having better sex than men.

A couple in bed reading the Bible before sex

So why is our reality not nearly so sex positive for women? Because we live in a world full of sin and selfishness. And sadly, there is another reason. Many of us are steeped in non-biblical and ungodly lies about sex.

The truth is, God wants you to have a great marriage complete with a fantastic sex life. Believing that truth won’t instantly change things, but it’s a great step in the right direction. Beyond that, teaching your son’s and daughters this truth can help them avoid many of the frustrations and let-downs you’ve had about sex.

WBW: You Might be Sexually Normal If…

This post is a bit different. While I will touch on your husband some, my goal here is to help you see you are “normal”, as opposed to broken, or defective.

As I read the results of a couple of our recent surveys on Female Orgasm During Intercourse and Multiple Orgasms, I realised once again how messed up we are about sex. Porn and society have so skewed our understanding, we tend to see normal people as broken. And because we don’t usually talk openly about sex, especially in Christian circles, we have no way of knowing what’s normal for real individuals and couples. As a result, women with normal sex organs think they’re “deformed” and women with normal sexual desire and function think they’re defective. Men are similarly confused, both about their own sexuality and that of women.

My goal here is to give you a baseline, with our surveys to back me up. Based on other surveys we’ve done, we know most of our respondents are mostly Christian, and as a group more serious about their faith than the average churchgoer. We also know the women are more sex positive than Christian women are in general. Based on those facts, I would say the women in our survey are “above average”.

Closeup of pink rose flowers with water drops.

Intercourse Alone, Usually Isn’t Enough

A third of the women in our survey have never had an orgasm during intercourse without some added stimulation. Another 29% have only done so only a few times. Climax from intercourse alone was the norm (at least 60% of the time) for only one woman in six.

Bottom Line: Most women cannot climax from intercourse alone.

Add Something Clitoral

Adding clitoral stimulation (her hand, his hand, or a vibrator) to intercourse improves things greatly. Eight-nine percent of women have climaxed this way, and just over half can do so at least 60% of the time they have intercourse.

Bottom Line : Needing a bit more than thrusting is normal.

Once, Twice, Three Times a Lady?

Most men who care at all about their wife would like her to climax repeatedly every time they have sex. Based on everything I’ve read, including our surveys, this is an individual preference issue for women. Some women find it easy, some find it difficult, and some have never done it. What’s more, some who could say they’d rather not. As one woman said, “I feel totally and completely fulfilled after one — and at that point not interested at all in pursuing another.” On the other hand, another woman said, “I have never had less than 2 orgasms in our entire marriage.” Some women say going for more than one takes away from sex, while others would feel cheated with only one. Some women who have multiples feel like it on some occasions, but not others. Some can have multiples sometimes, but not other times, and have no idea why.

Bottom Line: Every woman is different on this, and whatever you want is right and normal for you.

Sex? Sure. Orgasm? Not Tonight.

Most women have times when they want to have sex, or are willing to have sex, but do not want to orgasm. Men don’t understand this, but most can learn to accept and respect it. In our survey on this, only 22% of women said they want to orgasm every time they have sex. Another 35% said they want to climax at least 90% of the time. Only 10% wanted to orgasm 50% or less of the time.

Bottom Line: Being sometimes satisfied with no climax sex is a normal thing for most women.

You Are Unique

Female sexuality is not one-size-fits-all. The range of orgasmic experience in men is narrow, both from one time to the next and from one man to another. For women, the range is much greater, from time to time and woman to woman. If your husband had sex with another woman before you, he will be confused because you are different. If he expects you to be the same today as you were last week, he will be confused. Some of your sexual responses can change, some cannot.

For some reason, God made female sexuality less uniform than male sexuality. For women, “normal sexuality” is a wide continuum, not a bull’s eye. My suggestion is to stop worrying about what other women want, feel, and enjoy. Focus on your desires and your body; learn to receive sexual pleasure from your husband, and give him the same.

Bottom Line: There is nothing wrong with you. God made you unique and wonderful. Society wants to push you into something you are not… please fight back!

The Variations are Physical Too

No two women look alike. This is true for both faces and vulvae. The variation is genitals is actually very wide. Unfortunately, porn has led to the idea of the “perfect vulva”. Even worse, virtually no adult woman naturally looks like the supposed ideal. Surgery to try to look like the ideal is increasingly common. My wonderful wife addressed this a while ago in her Don’t Do It! post.

By the way, recent research is finding physical differences can affect a woman’s sexual function. The ability to orgasm from intercourse with no added clitoral stimulation seems related to the distance between the vagina and the clitoris. Differences in the size, placement, or sensitivity of the G-Spot are likely why some women climax from certain positions (rear entry in particular) while others do not.

Bottom Line: Learn to love and enjoy what you have, and encourage your husband to do the same. In my experience, men don’t care what their wife’s genitals look like; they just want to enjoy them. He wants sex to be great for you, and if you guide him, he will likely be an eager student.

Understanding Introvert vs. Extrovert in Marriage

While there are exceptions, usually one spouse is an introvert, and the other is an extrovert. This has some advantages and can help balance both, but it can lead to issues if the spouses are not understanding.

Grunge textured backdrop with the words extrovert and introvert.

My son is an extreme introvert. He can be very social and makes a strong effort, but it costs him. There are times he is just done and needs to not be around people. His wife has figured this out, and is understanding. If she were not, it would have become a significant marriage problem.

The reverse issue is not understanding a husband who needs to be with people. Most extroverted guys work in jobs that put them in contact with a lot of folks, so this one is less likely to be a concern. I suspect it became an issue for some couples during Covid when extroverted hubbies couldn’t get out.

If you and your husband are not the same in this area, please understand that what he feels is a hardwired part of who he is, just as it is true for you. Also, understand that he has very real needs based on this, and he can’t be emotionally healthy if those needs are not met or if his limits are regularly violated.

WBW: Science Continues to Show Gender Differences are Real

I have talked about gender difference here a number of times, and I have usually supported what I say with good science. There are those who deny men and women have any real differences, and there are even those who claim science backs them on that. In reality, science continues to show gender is more than skin deep.

My friend Felicity Dale put it this way:

I studied medicine (I’m a physician by background) and not only are we anatomically different, nearly every system in our body is different in some way. The X and Y chromosomes make an impact. We obviously have different endocrine systems (hormones), but other systems differ too. For example, our skeletons are different. Our musculature is different. Our brains are different (men’s brains are larger, but women’s have more connections between right and left hemispheres.) When I studied diseases, I had to learn the differing rates at which diseases occur in men and women. Study any text book on pathology and you cannot get away from the differences.” [from the blog post We are different]

Male & Female Symbols on keyboard

I have done a good deal of study on this issue over the years. I have also seen how gender differences play out in marriages. A great book about this is Sex on the Brain: 12 Lessons to Enhance Your Love Life by Daniel G. Amen M.D..

On Pp 74 Dr. Amen says:

Male-female communication styles are radically different, brain based, and hardwired. Many people think these differences are culturally defined, yet they appear very stable across almost all cultures studies, and have roots in the brain.

– and –

We expect our partners to be able to read our minds and think as we think. Unfortunately we are just not wired that way.

Other facts from the book:

  • The limbic system, the emotional bonding centre of the brain, is larger in women than in me.
    • This makes bonding easier for women.
    • Women tend to have more friends.
    • Women go to church more and pray more.
    • Because of the larger limbic size, women suffer more depression.
  • The left side of the inferior parietal lobe is larger in men. This part of the brain estimates time, judges speed, and visualises objects in three dimensions. (In theory, this makes men safer drivers. In practice, we may overestimate our abilities and get in trouble.)
  • Due to brain differences, women are more likely to get lost, while men are less likely to realise they are lost when they are lost. (See, he really doesn’t think he is lost!)
  • For men, language happens only on the left side of the brain; women have language skills on both sides. This makes women superior communicators, and superior listeners. (This may explain that glazed over look he gets when you talk for more than a few minutes.)
  • Women are better at gauging the feelings of others and reading facial expressions because the part of the brain that does these things is more developed in women. (No, he does not know what you are thinking, and that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you.)
  • Men as a whole have shorter attention spans than women. (You knew that, didn’t you?) However, men are better able to focus intently on one thing. (Like video games.)
  • Due to brain differences, women have better peripheral vision, while men have better long-distance central vision, and better night vision. (Maybe he doesn’t need more light?)
  • At rest, a woman’s brain is busier than a man’s is. (Yes, he can be thinking about nothing.)
  • In men, exercise tends to stimulate the brain, while in women it tends to calm the brain. (This makes talking while you walk together a great plan.)

The Connection Between Orgasms & Sleep Quality

A recent small study found that an orgasm resulting from sex with a partner improved sleep. Both men and women fell asleep faster and had better sleep quality. Sex without orgasm, or masturbation with an orgasm, did not provide the same benefit. The study was small, and it was done at a university, so most of the subjects were young and single. Still, this matches anecdotal evidence, and the chemicals released when we orgasm do relax us.

Couple's feet With labels reading "Sex" and "sleep"

This suggests making bedtime sex a priority might be good for more than your marriage and enjoyment. It could improve your sleep. Of course for this to help you have to be able to have sex fairly quickly. The longer you have sex, the less time you get to sleep, even if you fall asleep more quickly. That should not be an issue for him, but what about you? Can you have quick no-frills sex to climax? What would it take to make that happen?

Maybe you could go to bed a bit earlier, enjoy each other, and sleep better! Who knows, you might start saying, “Tonight. I have an early day tomorrow.”
