When you want your husband to do something for you, or to change how he does something, ask him to do it as a favour to you. Even if you think what you’re asking for is something he should do, asking it as a favour is a better way to go.

This is a good idea regardless of gender, but when a wife asked a favour of her husband, she has the added bonus of tapping into his desire to love and protect his bride. It works with the way God has made him. Additionally, you avoid any risk of being seen as nagging.
~ Paul – I’m XY and I like doing favours for my wonderful wife.

I know some women are not fans either, but I think men in general are more unhappy about Valentine’s Day than women in general.
The short answer to why men dislike it is “There’s nothing in it for me, and a high risk I will get it wrong and pay for that.”

Of course, that is a major generalisation, but a good many men would agree with it. Valentine’s Day seems to have become more and more about pleasing her, as opposed to a holiday for lovers. I suspect we can blame marketing to a large degree.
Men complain the holiday is all for women, focused on what they want and need, while ignoring what men like. Some have suggested they would be fine if there were a holiday for men. (Some are promoting a male alternative to V-day a month later, a day all about steak and oral sex, but I digress.)
The other big complaint is being unable to give their wife what she wants. I used to think this was just men being clueless, but then I saw guys do all the things we think women want, only to be told they failed. I suspect it is not the norm, and it is played up to make guys feel better about not really trying, but for some it’s a real issue.
Many men really don’t understand romance. To them, romance it is a secret dark art with rules they can’t decipher. Most women don’t think about love and romance the way men do; so we can do what seems good to us and completely miss it. A few well-intended misses is enough to convince a guy he’s being asked to play a game he can’t win. If he got that from a former girlfriend or two, he may have given up before he even met you.
As with most things, if you want him to understand what you want, be obnoxiously clear. Men tend to miss or misinterpret hints.

“Let there be peace on earth in my home.” ~ Men everywhere
“It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.“~ Proverbs 21:9 and 25:24 [ESV]

Men want peace in their home. A lack of peace will drive a man to do all kinds of things, including not coming home and even leaving home for good. I would say peace in the home is more than a desire, it’s a need. Trying to fill that need can result in problems.
I realise all of the above can be a problem, and I’m not excusing or justifying a man who refuses to deal with things. What I’m trying to do is help you understand how deeply your husband needs a place of peace, a refuge, a sanctuary. If you understand this need, you can find ways to discuss what needs to be discussed and still give him the peace he needs. You can become part of his refuge, rather than an enemy of peace.
In terms of peace, timing is everything, and it can make a huge difference. Learn when he most feels the need for peace, and when he is most able to deal with difficult situations. Another skill to develop is knowing how long to leave something before bringing it up again. I know it seems he will never deal with it if you don’t keep bringing it up. At best, this is teaching him to ignore you because he knows it will come up again shortly. If it’s not critical, let it go longer than you think is reasonable to see if he will do something on his own. If he learns you will give him time and space if he deals with things in a reasonable amount of time, he will be motivated to deal with things.
Good ways to show you understand his need for peace are to say things like:
~ Paul – I’m XY, and I like my peace!

I’ve heard a number of the women say men are so hard to shop for. I think men are much easier to shop for than women, but I guess that’s because I am one. So if this is really an issue, allow me to help by offering my updated gift giving guide for guys.
Guys aren’t all the same, but what we find “shiny” is fairly common. Below are some things I really like that I think most men would see as great gifts.
Wireless Bluetooth Noise Cancelling Headphones
My son says noise-canceling headphones have saved his sanity. He wears them to cut wood and to cut the noise of two noisy boy children. These include a microphone so he can take calls without removing them. Long-lasting batteries will run almost two days on a single charge.
It seems there are never enough USB charging ports! This little power house can charge four devices.
As Tim the Toolman Taylor would say “more power”!
One day my son, our neighbour, and I all reached into our pocket and pulled out this multitool. It’s a sturdy, mid-price option that puts a whole lot of tools in your pocket or glove box. The fact that we all looked at all the choices on Amazon and bought the same one suggests it should please most men.
Rechargeable Magnetic Flashlights
I’ve never met a guy who doesn’t love a great flashlight. I mean it’s the ultimate shiny thing!
These LED lights are extra useful because the magnet allows you to stick it to something, freeing a hand. It does narrow beam or floodlight. I’ve bought lights like these for several friends, and they survived multiple years of regular use. USB recharging means no changing batteries.
Energizer LED Headlamp PRO (2-Pack)
A great light for crawling around under a house or working on pretty much anything when you need both hands free. The light is where you look, even when you’re upside down. This isn’t usually the first flashlight I go for, but when I use it, I’m really glad I have it. As of 12/5 it was on sale, two for under $10.
Of course, you have to hide this from children and grandchildren because they love it. Or give them one of their own, as it’s a two-pack.
128GB Dual Connector Flash Drive![]()
What makes this drive great is it can connect to both USB-A 3.0 and type-C ports. I’ve used this feature to make it easy to move large files from my phone to my computer. It also means you can get a file from any system.
A great drive for ten dollars and change, or double the capacity for under $20.00
RYOBI 18V Cordless LED Flashlight
Yes, another flashlight. This one is great for lighting up the outdoors at a distance, and even better as a work light. The solid base and swivel on the light means you can put the light where you want it, and it stays there. It’s the one I grab when I’m working on our car. This item is not sold with a battery and charger. If hubby already has some Ryobi battery tools, this is a great gift. If he’s already got rechargeable tools from another company, you might want to look at what they have that is similar.
Great for a number of activities where regular goggles don’t work because they fog up. Lori and I both use them for weed eating. Also, great when running a chain saw. Not acceptable all the time, but so much better when they do the job. Safety gear you’ll use is better than what you won’t!
These cut-resistant gloves can protect your hands in the kitchen, but they are also great for woodworking, carving, carpentry, oyster shucking, or butchering that buck he just shot.
These wax earplugs stay in place and really cut noise. Great for power tools, shooting, or that men’s retreat where the guys who snore always fall asleep first!
The only way to make great coffee (IMHO)! Makes one or two cups of very smooth coffee. A short soak time reduces bitterness. Travels well, as you only need to add hot water. A must-have for any coffee connoisseur.
Upgrade with a Prismo Attachment – a no-drip attachment with a reusable metal filter that lets you pull a shot.
Need to make more coffee? The Aeropress XL is twice as large.
Madalyn’s Backyard Pecan Flavored Whole Bean Coffee
We were introduced to pecan coffee while visiting friends in Austin. It’s made with bits of pecans roasted along with the coffee beans. The brand we loved in Austin is now on Amazon, and it even qualifies for Subscribe & Save.
Looking for a medium roasted cup of coffee that smells great and tastes just as good? Give this a try!
Foldable Drone with 1080P HD Camera
Every guy wants a drone, and with prices dropping, this one is currently $55 with the coupon on the site. This is an Amazon’s Choice, with 4.3 stars for 2,000 ratings.
The case and ability to fold it make it easy to pack this and use it where ever. I did some hiking with a group where one girl had a drone like this she used to get great shots at the top of the mountain we had climbed. This unit is made for beginners, so it’s an easy learning curve. Of course, he will want a bigger and better one next year…
YETI Rambler 26 oz Bottle, Vacuum Insulated, Stainless Steel with Chug Cap
I got a vacuum insulated bottle at a men’s retreat, and I love it. Whatever’s put in it stays hot or cold for hours.
Pick from two dozen colours so he can sip in style.
And of course, you can’t go wrong with a sex toy or lingerie from our friends at Married Dance!
Something to have sex on, something to put on or use on him, or something for him to use on you. These are gifts that keep on giving!
~ Paul – I’m XY, and we’re not really hard to shop for!

Do you ever talk about sex apart from when you’re doing it or discussing doing it?
Most men think about sex many times a day. He thinks about what you did a couple of nights ago, and what he wants to do next time. He thinks about that time on vacation when you got rained out and spent the entire afternoon making love, and he dreams about giving you the ultimate orgasm.

You can step into that part of his mind if you choose to do so. Make a suggestive comment about how his new jeans fit. Text him you were thinking about last night, and now you want him again. Use phrases like “Wait till I get you home” and “Guess what I’m thinking about”. Start easy and get bolder as you feel more confident.
Doing this makes you a part of his inner sex dialogue. It also lets you steer that dialogue a bit.
~ Paul – I’m XY, and I encourage you to take sex beyond the bedroom.

Does your husband avoid church? Maybe this is the case even if he loves God and strives to live a Christ-like life. Truth is, the way we do church does not appeal to most men.
David Murrow, author of Why Men Hate Going to Church, says churches changed during the industrial revolution. Large numbers of men went far from home to work in mines, mills, and factories. The women left behind remade churches into what women wanted. I would say much of what the women instituted was fine, even needed. The problem is, they didn’t add it to what was there; they made major replacements. They added things that attract women, and removed things that attract men. While I’m sure it was not the intention, what they did was create a church men wouldn’t want to attend.

Murrow says most churches appeal to women and seniors, and this is exactly who we see filling the pews of most churches. Young single men are exceptionally rare. Young and middle age married men are a bit more common, but many of them are just showing up to keep their wife from complaining. Most churches don’t offer the things men are seeking: no risk, no challenge, and no adventure.
I urge you to have an open, honest talk with your husband about church. If he’s not going, or not going often, ask him why. If he’s going to church, ask him to be brutally honest about how he feels about the church. Be open to what he thinks, realising it’s valid for him. Do not try to talk him out of what he feels. He might bury it, but it won’t change how he feels.
You and your husband need to attend a church that works for both of you, a church that meets his needs as well as it meets your needs. Maybe that means being part of a change at your church. This would be my first recommendation. If your current church isn’t willing to become what a man needs a church to be, you’ll have to consider finding a new church. I don’t lightly advise this, but it may be critical for your husband’s spiritual health. If his church isn’t challenging him, he’ll find it difficult to grow spiritually. It is even possible for the church to hurt his spiritual maturity.
BTW, this issue will become a problem for your sons as they hit the teen years. If you want to keep them engaged at church, you have to be at a church that engages young men.
~ Paul – I’m XY, and the image is how many churches look to men.

Recently, my very wise wife asked me, “Can I tell you something without you taking offence for me?” When I said yes, she told me about something unkind someone had said to her.
The preamble question helped me fight the urge to take offence. It also let me know Lori was not expecting me to confront the other person. It was brilliant and helpful.

You could do much the same with any number of things you need to share with your husband. You could ask a question or make a statement. This prepares him, and lets him know what you expect from him. It keeps him from going in a direction you don’t want, and makes it more likely he will be understanding and helpful.
~ Paul – I’m XY, and I was still a bit offended, but I got over it faster.

I think “not feeling like a real man” is one of the biggest hidden issues of our day. Many men, possibly most, secretly question their masculinity. We don’t generally discuss this out of fear and shame. We sit with it in a dark, lonely place, thinking it’s just me.
Part of the problem is we don’t have other men to assure us of our masculinity when we are growing up. If my dad was unsure of his masculinity, how could he affirm my masculinity? My friends were in the same situation, so while they beat their chests and yelled they were men, they feared they were not. As teens and young adults, men say horrible, emasculating things to one another. The one receiving this plays it off, but it hurts and makes us fear they’re right.

Many men feel more secure in their masculinity when they get married. Usually this results from looking to his marriage or his wife to affirm his masculinity. But this is doomed to fail. This can lead to strange and ugly behaviour:
Some of what I’ve listed is fine if a man doesn’t go overboard. They can help him feel more manly, but if he doesn’t feel manly to start with, they likely will not solve the issue for him. Masculinity is bestowed on us by men who are masculine. This is best done at a young age, but it can be done at any age. Most men never feel secure in their masculinity until they spend time with a “real man” and receive his assurance.
I don’t have a real point or suggestion in all this. I figure the better you understand him, the better for both of you.
~ Paul – I’m XY, and I am deeply thankful for the men who affirmed my masculinity.
