On Monday, I talked about how we tend to expect things from our spouse even when we’ve not shared our expectations. One big place men do this is with sex. And this can lead to frustration and hard feelings.
It helps to understand why men do this. Most men have fears about sex:

Because of these fears, it’s common for men to ask for less sex than they want. Not just less in terms of quantity, but also what we ask for. And we downplay it when we ask for something new. We hint about something we’re dying to try and make it seem like it’s not a big deal. If we don’t get enthusiasm from our lady, we drop it.
Most guys are asking for what they think is acceptable, while wanting more. If such a guy gets everything he asks for, he still feels cheated because it’s not all he wants.
If you’d like to help him out, reach out. Ask him if he’s fully satisfied with how often you have sex, or if a bit more often would be better. Ask him what he’d like to try that you’re not doing. Listen for hedging, and nudge a bit deeper.

A couple of years ago, my lovely Lori wrote a post entitled It’s OK to Be Different. Living with me, Lori has seen more than her share of different. Either she has seen the value in different or has lost her mind. Perhaps both!
From where I stand, it seems women are more concerned than men are about being outside the norm. I certainly know plenty of exceptions on both sides, but it seems men are more comfortable being further from normal than women are. No doubt, some of this is because women take more grief than men do for being different. Men seem to get wider margins for both acceptable difference and admirable difference.

One of the ways I see this play out is wives trying to limit their husband’s level of different. Lori did this early in our marriage, mostly out of fear of what others would think. Fairly quickly, she decided “I was an adult” and could take care of myself. She also declared she was not responsible for me, or my actions. In short, she chose to not act like a mother to me. For my part, I tried not to go so far I embarrassed her.
Trying to limit or control your husband being difference is a trap. He will resent you for it, and you will resent him for not listening to you. He may also start treating you as his conscience or voice of reason, and this could free him from listening to his own reason. No one wins, and your marriage loses in multiple ways. Alternatively, you may keep him somewhat under control, which means he never sees how others would feel about his actions.
He’s a grown man, even if you don’t think he acts like one. I’m all for telling him what you need, and what offends or embarrasses you; but let him do what he wants and let him suffer any consequences. You’re not responsible for him, so let him be himself. You’ll both be happier in the long run.

Breasts: Every single woman has them, including his grandmother. You’d think by his mid-twenties, he’d be able to focus on women’s faces. ~ Seen on the Internet
I agree, men should look at your face, not your breasts. But the quote shows a lack of understanding on the part of the woman who said it. Multiple well done studies have found our brains are wired to notice breasts. And given God is the one who wired us, it seems He is to blame for this.
To be fair, God didn’t intend us to ever get a good look at breasts other than those of our wife. But that’s not the world we live in.

Of course, men should control themselves. And they should not assume a woman showing a lot is making an offer. But you should understand it does take effort. You should also understand showing much cleavage is a big red arrow, that increases the effort needed to do what’s right.
In private, encourage your hubby to not control himself, and give him plenty to look at. I know you think your breasts are not lust worthy, but I assure you, your man does. So give him a show from time to time. He’ll be glad you did.

So a week from yesterday is Super Bowl LIX. I’m not a sports fan, so I can’t explain your husband’s obsession from a first-hand basis. But I do know it’s a big deal for a lot of guys.

Here’s the thing. It’s one day a year, and it is extremely important for some guys. If your husband cares at all, do what you can to make it a fun day for him. Give him the kind of day you want him to make Valentines for you.
If you want to go above and beyond, offer him congratulatory or conciliatory sex after the game. If you dare, initiate by asking him to put it between the uprights!

My wife tells the story of going with me to a hardware store I had never been in before. I walked in and said to a male employee, “screw eyes”. He answered, “Aisle 5”. That was the entire “conversation”.
Lori says a female customer would have said, “I need to hang a humming-bird feeder, and I’m looking for a decorative screw eye…” She also told me a female employee might have found my approach a bit rude.

Neither method of obtaining the location of the screw eyes is wrong, nor is one inherently better. However, gender differences mean my request is best suited for use with another man. Most women want (need?) more than the raw facts when they communicate. For women, communication is not just about sharing information, it is usually also about relationship. For men, communication is about exchanging needed information, and efficiency is often prized.
Two applications:
The two of you communicate in different ways. Neither is wrong, but neither works well for the other. If you each move a bit towards the communication style of the other, you can avoid all manner of problems.

Last week, I talked to the guys about getting marriage help when you need it. Today it’s your turn.
I realise women are more likely to suggest and to attend counselling, therapy, or coaching. So maybe what you want to know is how to get him to go.

There’s definitely some pride involved in men not getting help. But more often men avoid couple’s help because they think it is a way of telling him what he’s doing wrong while she gets a pass. This is particularly a concern when the third party is a woman. Convince hubby you want to discover what both of you can do to make your marriage better, and he will be less resistant. Suggesting that dealing with some of your issues will improve your sex life will also motivate him. And, if you have significant sexual struggles, putting them on the list of things to deal with is a good idea.
Along these lines, Lori and I now do marriage coaching through Aldrich Ministries. Aldrich offers coaching for both individuals and couples, and most marriage issues can be addressed by coaching. Coaching is less expensive than therapy, and because it can be done across state lines and internationally, you have access to a great team no matter where you live.
Depending on your needs, you may or may not be paired with us. There are people who do story work, coaching for men or women, and help with porn and other unwanted sexual urges. Also, available are pre-marital and help with sexual difficulties. If cost is a concern, there’s a sliding scale.

Last week, I suggested to the guys over on The Generous Husband that a lot of what happens in marriage is one spouse seeking attention or respect from the other. And often the things done for attention and respect aren’t very nice or loving. Kids aren’t the only ones who will act out to get attention!

Attention and respect are things we all crave, and we especially want those things from the person we married. When that doesn’t happen, it can lead to bad things. I suspect most nagging comes from this place. Calling attention to one’s self in public may be seeking attention. Flirting with others may be an attempt to get attention via jealousy. And so on.
Might this be a factor in some of your husband’s behaviour? What about you, might some of what you do be driven by these needs? Consider, adjust, and address as needed.

Sex is a point of frustration in most marriages, and a point of conflict in many.
If either spouse understood the other well, and was at all loving and caring, things would change.
If he understood her difficulties with sex, he would make changes in when and how he asks. He would also change what he asks for, what he expects, and what happens when sex does occur. And if he was looking at porn, he’d be motivated to deal with that.

As for the other side, if she understood what sex means to him, and how not having it often enough effects him, she would say no far less often. Additionally, she would be quick to offer something else, and would initiate on occasion. And if she had junk from her past, that was getting in the way of sex, she would be motivated to deal with that.
The difficulty is, I don’t know how to get men to understand women’s valid needs in this area. I know the needs, but when I try to express them, my words fall short. I have an even more difficult time telling the men about women’s valid needs in this area, because it’s second hand information for me.
The best I can do it to suggest you ask hubby questions, listen for his heart, and pray for God to give you grace and wisdom.
And yes, if you’re the higher drive, the genders are reversed for you.
