The five-year-old grandson has gotten himself stuck in a tree several times this spring. The first time his dad rescued him. When he got stuck while I was away, Lori stayed with him to keep him calm while his brother went to get mom. Just as mom arrived, he got his boot clad foot over the branch and climbed down. Realising the boots were a problem, he went inside to put on shoes and try again. But he was told to stay out of the tree, which resulted in some foot stomping.

Notice, this little man was determined to beat that tree. While I know plenty of girls who climb like a monkey, changing shoes to have another try after being more than a bit worried is a guy thing.

The other thing is how I would have handled it had I been there. I’d have helped him see his boots were a problem if he didn’t figure it out, and encouraged him to try again. If he got stuck, I would have offered suggestions and told him I would help if he asked.

The real point I want to make here is men invite boys into manhood. Women can’t do it, nor should they try. And as men, we continue to need other men to keep us following the masculine path.
